Why is a person that works at a bank called a teller?

Apparently, the "old" meaning of tell is count. So, the bank tellers would count out the money for their customers.

A Teller used to tally the votes of an election
so I guess they related it the person at the bank who counts the money,
thus a bank teller

It's just a low paying job, so they "teller" you how much money you can keep.
