It varies immensely based on the quality and the training level of the horse. You will most certainly be able to find horses for sale for a couple hundred dollars if you look around enough, but there's a pretty good chance they're going to be very old, have health problems, or be utterly untrained. Nice quality performance horses might start at 10,000 and continue upward from there into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you want just a nice companion horse that you can take out on trail rides and you're up for some training challenges, you can probably find a nice riding horse for something between $4000 and $10000, and possibly quite a bit lower if you find the right circumstance. Be prepared to shop around a bit to find out what going prices are for the area before you buy, as Texas prices could be totally different than what's out here on the east coast.

Some things to keep in mind are that a horse that appears to be a good bargain because nobody has ridden them in several years is probably not such a great bargain, especially if you are a new rider. Strong recommendation before buying would be to take a few riding lessons before you buy your own horse and then use that instructor to help you evaluate any potential new purchase. Buying the wrong horse at the right price can net you a real purty decoration for your backyard but not a very good riding animal.

Actually this is to sunshine. The program you speak of is the adoption of wild horses only and not for "breaking"/riding purposes. It is to keep the wild horses free and fed especially during the long winter months when food is scarce. I believe what the asker was wanting to know is how much it would cost to purchase a horse for riding, and like has already mentioned it depends on the breed, the age, how "tame" she wants the horse to be, how expierenced she is at riding, also factored into those costs are boarding fees, as well as food and upkeep. You don't just pasture a "domestic" horse and expect them to "fend for themselves.

Do a search of the local animal shelter......there are always horses needing a good home. The cost is generally lower than buying one from a breeder, there are many fine horses up for adoption that really need a good home.

Doesn't the government have a program to re-house wild horses? You might be able to get a free one (you probably pay transporation) but then again it's a wild horse not suitable for riding. You'd be saving a horse, though. Do you know anything about horses? They might be more expensive to keep and care for than you realize. Please research before gettting one.

Horses are sometimes rescued from abusers and you could adopt one probably for free (if you qualify). Consult the local animal rescue agencies.
