Take your car into your nearest local Ford/Lincoln dealer and ask a service advisor to run your VIN (vehicle identification number) through OASIS to see if your particular car has a 03N01 campaign. The campaign mentioned refers to an replacement of the fuel pump and sending unit assembly FREE OF CHARGE TO YOU.

1. The fuel float in the gas tank that sends a signal to the fuel gage might be going bad. In any case it takes the electronics a few seconds to read the data coming from the sending unit on the gas tank and display it on the instrument panel. This might be normal because cars do funny things in cold weather. I wouldn't worry about it on a six hour drive, just stop and fill up when your half way there.

2. Pop off your hubcaps in back and make sure you don't have a stone or salt stuck inside. A stone will rattle around at slow speed but at high speed centrifugal force will throw it against the inside of the wheel and you won't hear anything. I don't think you have any real problem with a little rattle at low speed. (If you have beer cans in the trunk they will rattle around too!)

I had that same problem with my car and the problem was a plastic box they put in the gas tank to stop splash on the float system broke away from its mounts.didnt cause any problem in driving but be careful to watch your guage cuz mine got hung up and the guage read full all the time. just keep gas in the tank and maybe carry a can of gas in the trunk just case

you could have a bad ground some where from the gas tank to the dash. For the second problem check if you got a bad exhaust mount in the rear that could be your problem. If your goin to take this trip just make sure you tank is all ways full.

possible fuel pump module or a cluster problem. some fuel tank is made with baffels to preventfuel splash. a fuel splash can cause the needle fo fluctuate on the noise it can be an exhaust shield or a broken hanger that is causing this problem
