We all know from basic physics that a fan on a sail boat will not make the boat move. A fan outside the sail boat will allow it to move. Now that we know that..what if GL was sitting in a boat and made a fan with his ring...would the boat move? Show your work.

Okay, yes, the boat will move. But it’s not because the fan is pushing against the boat and the air at once.

What the Ring does is exert control over the basic physical forces of the universe, like gravitation and electromagnetism.

In a case like this, the Ring would cause a local anisotropic gravity source causing air to be accelerated in the direction of the sail. As soon as the moving air passed the image of the fan (which is only a special effect) the gravitation would cease to affect the air, and it would continue on to strike the sail and propel the boar because the air retains its momentum.

This is the same way Green Lantern manages to fly; by creating a local gravitational source toward which he falls, but it moves ahead of him so that he can never fall into it.

The green images are light constructs with no mass. This is how two different GL’s can achieve the same effects without having to visualize the same object, or even any object at all. One could just use the green targeting beam and exert force directly upon the target. That is all they do. The form of the green images are purely personal traits of their imaginations.

P.S. This does not apply to Alan Scott’s Ring, which uses magic.

almost everything he does is against the laws of physics
the boat will move

Neither the ring nor its constructs are bound by the normal laws of physics; anything he makes with his ring can do whatever he imagines it can.It 's all about his willpower behind the ring.

It wouldn't work if a fan is a person that your talking about. Jk. It will work anyway because it's science fiction.
