Greed is the reason behind war, started by Governments who use religion as a main reason to start them.

Because it's convenient. If you have x, and believe in it, and x says that war is wrong, then when you DO have a war, you say 'x, you total ********, how could you have got it so wrong?' and you don't believe x for a while.
That notwithstanding, religion is often misinterpreted to advocate war -think of the crusades- and so people then say 'well if religion is so easily misinterpreted it sounds like a big crock of **** in the first place,' and so blame it twiceover. What fun.

I think that people who blame all wars on religion are generalising. There are alot of wars that were started on religious grounds (The crusades for example) and the latest "war on terrorism" seems to be partly religiously based so people find it easy to scapegoat religion but though religion might have caused some nasty wars it is not the only cause of war most wars are caused by social stresses and religion is only one type of social stress. it has just been turned into an easy target for people to blame

PEOPLE are to blame for wars! The use religion or race or whatever as excuses or reasons. I am an atheist, but I have to say, if there was no religion, mankind would find some other reason to make war.

But toss this into the mix, the wars are for...land, property, wealth, power,ideology(all of which goes back to the religious leaders who were the 2nd in command(who nagged the ruler) and who got the spoils of the wars that they said should be waged. "For God and all that is holy" and other such chants. Check out the Crusades for example. Driven by the RC church. As for the older civilizations well it is "my god is stronger than yours chant" na, nah, na,na,nah.

The wars if you look were backed by religons. Even today the Islamic wars are all brought about by Islamic clerics insiteing the people to violence.
