It doesn't go by north and south..... (Both Chicago and Indy are from the north after all.)

The idea that the NFL is broken up into the AFC and NFC conferences due to their geographical location isn’t quite true. Not all of the states of the USA have a football team, in fact most of the teams are on the Eastern side of the country. States like California and Florida have three NFL teams each but they aren’t in the same conference – for example in California the San Francisco 49ers are in the NFC but the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders are AFC teams. There are also two New York teams in the NFL – the Jets and the Giants – and they are in different conferences.

In the 1960s there were actually two American football leagues – the established NFL and the rival competition the American Football League. The idea of the Superbowl was to see which competition had the best team. The two competitions joined together in 1970 to become the NFL as we know it today.

The Superbowl is played between the top team from both the NFC and AFC conferences. So you’ll never have two NFC or two AFC teams play off in the Superbowl. The AFC and NFC rivalry also takes place in the Pro Bowl, where the best players from each conference play each other in an All Star game in Hawaii a few weeks after the Superbowl.
