1) A lesbian that is always seen with one other woman, or with many women.
2) She kisses, holds hands with, and shares other physical intimacies with women.
3) Wears rainbow-colored clothing, jewelry, etc., etc..
4) She champions GLBT rights and consistently talks about lesbianism.
5) She frequents lesbian bars and other gay events.
These are the top features that give away a woman as a lesbian. And even these aren't secure; women who hang out all the time may just be close friends, a woman who is intimate with another woman may in fact not be lesbian, but bisexual, someone might just enjoy rainbows or bright colors, lots of straight people champion GLBT rights, and sometimes straight people go out to gay bars just to have fun, or hang out with friends who are gay.
Basically, there are lots of other stereotypes out there- that butch women who act, dress, and talk in masculine ways are lesbians, but it's just not true. I've seen lots of tomboys and butch girls who are straight arrows. Plus there are tons of femme lesbians who are practically invisible in society because we can't imagine a feminine woman might be lesbian.
There is nothing that can decisively pin someone down as being a lesbian unless it is catching them in intimate acts with other women. Everything else is just a stereotype (which may or may not be true, but nonetheless does not apply universally). Sorry; if you want to know, you've just got to ask.
Hope that helps!

Lesbians can appear to have some "lesbian characteristics" but some are lipstick lesbians and are just as girly as any straight female. You can see a very flamboyant gay male and spot him right away and you can see an ultra-butch female and spot her right away, but there are also the ones in the middle and the ones that seem perfectly straight so it would be ignorant to assume that all lesbians have a certain look. The only true way to tell is to get to know her, ask her and see if there's any chemistry. I have very close friends that know absolutely nothing about this side of me. I date women and occasionally hook up with women. I'm also a mother and I don't dress like a butch or even look like one. So there's no real way of telling with some women.

there really isn't a "certain way" that lesbians dress or act or whatever. it would be plain stereotype if you say that lesbians usually have short hair, wears plaids all the time, snapbacks, dresses like a guy, etcc. some girl could look and dress a little masculine but that doesn't mean that she's a lesbian. clothes have no gender/sexuality.. the only way to really find out if someone is a lesbian is to ask her.
also just because a girl is kissing or intimate with another girl does not necessarily they're lesbians. they could be bisexual, pansexual etcc.

Honestly, most of the time I dress like a guy, but I really doubt most people even guess that I'm a lesbian unless I tell them. When people find out, they're usually surprised, lol. I never know why.

The fact that I am very open about it. Seriously, I'm a femme and the stereotype for all lesbians is butch, so most people would never know if I didn't say anything.

Hmm well, I don't cut my hair short like a lot of lesbians do, but I do wear men's clothes. I keep my hair long cuz I'm a metalhead, and you need hair to headbang properly
