When I start my truck in the morning, the baffle goes "clatter......clatter clatter......clatter.........clatter clatter clatter.....clatter" in a sporadic sort of way. It goes away after I drive for 10 minutes. Is there something I can do to fix this? 1999

The clatter most likely is not due to the muffler or the catylic converter...........if it has high miles on the odometer .......the engine manifold heat riser mechanism is most likely loose .....caused by a broken riser spring that mounts on the outside of the exhaust manifold near the exhaust pipe connection. This is something the general operator of the vehicle will not be able to replace, its proper name is the "exhaust manifold heat riser assembly " its function is to control the engine warm-up cycle.......thats why it is rattling when you start the engine and quits after the engine warms up to operating temperature.......have a garage mechanic install a new one cost should be approximatly 50- 70 $ installed........ps does that help?

Yes, you can. The 4.3L is a 5.7L with two cylinders cut off. There has to be plenty of modification done however. The motor will have to be centered which means moving all sorts of things like rad supports, rad, and condenser mountings. The trans will have to be moved back and beefed up. The driveshaft will have to be shortened and the rear axle will have to be beefed up as well to handle the extra punch from the motor. Not to mention the upgrades to be made on the suspension, front and back, to deal with the extra weight and the extra punch. I would also recommend upgrading the brakes to be able to stop the thing once it gets going. You will also have to get a new PCM with a program to match what you are installing. These are big jobs and not for the faint of heart or a beginner. Good luck.

is the noise coming from the back or front. It could be you have a exhaust mount gone or the baffles in the muffler or the catalytic converter.Could cost $100 to $500 depending on what it is.

the only thing to do is replace the muffler, have seen quite a few of GM's with this..the baffle just breaks loose, due to rusting from condensation...
