Because their first act in coming here was breaking a law?

Not initially, no.

From my perspective, why should we allow someone to hop over someone else that is waiting patiently in line and following the rules?

Just because they got in here illegally does not mean they should have precedent over others that are doing the right thing.

So, If/when deported, they can then apply correctly and be processed like the rest. However, their initial act of coming here illegally would be considered along with the other details of their application.
