The accepted answer is that MITS is the first home microcomputer pc in 1975, and therefore the first personal computer. It was called the altair
Interesting note: The altair was so bad, with a bad memory and power supply, that the entire home compute industry was fostered just to provide replacement parts for it. Then the Imsai came out with the same bus as the altiar and off the market went.
There were earlier home computers but not microcomputer systems. Never got much attention.
The hammacher schlemmer catalog had a minicomputer for the home offered in the 1965 or 66 catalog. That's probably the first home application.

In the late 70's, Radio Shack sold probably the first personal computer that had wide sales, the TRS-80. The basic, and I do mean basic, model was 4K and was $399, the upgraded model (16K) was $999. Even $399 was a lot of money in those days. It had the processor, a monitor, a keyboard and a cassette deck. The was WAY before anything so sophisticated as internal hard drives or diskette drives.
The TRS-80 wasn't the first PC, though.
