I totally understand that!
I have the same problem, and so I've opted f or an ALMOST black looking color, made by Revlon, called "vixen". It's a deep burgundy/purple color, and looks pretty, not gothic.
Most important part is to keep nails short and manicured. Long nails will look like talons - scary! The best classy nail shape is 'squoval'.
OPI also has quite a few new dark colors that you might like.

I know black nail polish was really in last fall, and there were dozens of magazines showing celebrities and models wearing black nails. Try finding some magazine clippings to show her that just because someone wears black nails, does not mean that the person is "emo" or "goth." Black nails can definitely be sophisticated, if you pair it with the right styles. Tell her and show her. I've worn black nails may times before, mostly during the fall and winter seasons, and many of my friends and family members thought the trend was really chic.

I am the same way, pale skin dark hair. I love the way black polish looks too, but you are right it can make you/me look strange. I have found the perfect substitute, wine colored nail polish. A deep red can look just as good and maybe even a little better!

1. Deep gray: it sounds wried but it looks gorgeous
2. Deep red: you cant get sexier than that
3. Midnight shades
4. If you want something close to black try dark brown it looks pretty similar and nowadays everyone's wearing balck so dont worry... it all then depends on what your wearin too... if your wearin all black then yeah yull look goth but if your wearin white then black jus evens it all out so i say go for it :)

They make lots of pretty blue shades, but any dark color to me only works if it matches your outfit. Otherwise it has a demonic look.

Try a deep red, or a auburn color! They both look very nice and elegant!
