I think Joe Biden has the best plan:

First, the plan calls for maintaining a unified Iraq by decentralizing it and giving Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis their own regions. The central government would be left in charge of common interests, such as border security and the distribution of oil revenue.

Second, it would bind the Sunnis to the deal by guaranteeing them a proportionate share of oil revenue. Each group would have an incentive to maximize oil production, making oil the glue that binds the country together.

Third, the plan would create a massive jobs program while increasing reconstruction aid -- especially from the oil-rich Gulf states -- but tying it to the protection of minority rights.

Fourth, it would convene an international conference that would produce a regional nonaggression pact and create a Contact Group to enforce regional commitments.

Fifth, it would begin the phased redeployment of U.S. forces this year and withdraw most of them by the end of 2007, while maintaining a small follow-on force to keep the neighbors honest and to strike any concentration of terrorists.

Actually, when I watched CSPAN while they were in session, the did not. In fact one the of Rep. Senators, McCain surprised everyone by turning his opinion around. He is very much against sending the additional troops even though the 5 star general, Casey, said they would be a necessity for the objective of the new plan. McCain, in fact, was worse than the dems at the hearings and he just doesn't want to deal with it. In his opinion it won't work.

Now, McCain is running for Prez on the Rep ticket, but he's really the one putting his foot down with Congress. I think he took all the Dem's by surprise. But in answer to your actual question, No, no one, dem or rep are offering any other alternatives.

What they are trying to do at this point is get the extra troops in Bagdad to help the Iraq gov to get control. Iraq has their army set up, the local malitia, plus a national army...and they also have their police forces. Their own soldiers are taking the point along with their police forces, for this next plan, and need US soldiers for back-up. At least this is what Gen. Casey said the plan was.

The problem with the senate, is for example Hillary Clinton who found an article in the Washington Post with a quote in it from General Casey that was taken when he was still in Iraq. She chose to add it to his military file, instead of believing a 5 star general's own words. That's why congress can't get anywhere. They're so busy placing blame, they're not considering alternative solutions. But she and McCain were putting up a real fight there, and one other senator from the Carolina's. Man, was he horrible. He didn't want to believe this General at all. I mean, com'on. This General was there for 30 months and things were looking up until the Mosque got bombed and that's when things took a turn for the worse. So, they were in essence blaming the General for letting that happen and not the people who did it.

The actual war plan itself was drawn up by civilians at the Pentagon. Those in military follow orders, and if the do not agree, the pentagon may make some revisions, but they usually don't want any agruments. Two senators agreed that civilians creating 'war plans' in the pentagon should not be conducting military matters because once it goes to the President, (no matter who it is) once the orders or signed, they must be carried out without an argument. I don't think it's right for people who have not served to be drawing up war plans. That should be left to the heads of the military, don't you agree?

So, anyway...no...

No, the general differences between Republicans and Democrats go way beyond the war in Iraq. To put it as simple as it gets, Republicans tend to believe in more government involvement in our personal lives whereas Democrats tend to believe in self governing. Case in point, gay marriage and abortion. Republicans are trying to ban, ban, ban, and Democrats are all, "What business is it of ours what people do in their own homes or by their own choice?" That is why I am a Democrat. What's the sense of living in a free country if we have Big Brother Republicans breathing down our necks and telling us and our children what to do? Anyway, that's just an opinion..... I like your question because a lot of people don't know and won't admit it, and stay uninformed as a result. Read all that you can, learn the truth, and make your own decisions about what you believe and fight for them.

The debate about the war can be summed up in this story.

President Bush is driving the car with me in the backseat. He decides to drive off the road down a cliff. After we runoff the road he ask me, what I'm going to do to fix the situation?
Don't ask me to fix something I don't have control over and didn't support in the first place. But, I will have to pay the rest of my life in taxes for.

the debate is not about the war in iraq. it's about politics. dems know if we lose in iraq they win in 08. repubicans know if we win in iraq they win in 08. we as americans the most caring and giving people in the world need to let our politicians know this is not about them. it's about us . for whatever reason we went into iraq it does'nt matter now, we're there, and for the sake of the iraqi people we have to see this through. i have no dought there are mothers and fathers over there who want thier kids to go to school and not be blown up on the way and go to thier soccer games and cheer them on. this is about us who we are as a people as a nation.it's time we take back our nation and do what we do best, HELP PEOPLE! TO HELL WITH POLITICS!
