I have three sons. They are grown and pretty healthy. When they were babies it seemed they were always congested. Their chests were always rattling and their noses always running.Their symptoms got worse whenever the weather got damp or they were teething.
We took them to their pediatrician. Most likely they were teething and had hay fever or sinus problems. The doctor told us that with no fever they probably were ok but keep an eye on it. She also told us to cut back on their dairy feedings and give them more water until their symptoms got better.
If you are very concerned get a specialist's opinion. Take your baby to an allergists or someone who specializes in upper respiratory pediatric difficulties. Go to your regular pediatrician and tell them you are really worried and would like to check out a specialist. They should be able to refer you to someone. If the pediatrician is not cooperative get a new one and get the specialist too! Never fool around with your infant's health.
Good luck to you!

Was she born via C-Section? Many babies born surgically have these symptoms....there is residual congestion in the lungs because born this way--they didnt get 'squeegied' out - like babies who had to squeeze thru the birth canal. And many babies just seem to suffer with respiratory illness's more often than other babies. There is a great saline gel ...like saline spray...but SO MUCH easier to use...you just swipe some under babies nose and it helps to clear them out ...i think Vicks would be fine....I used to mix a gob of Vaseline along with the Vicks when my kids were so young. Cool mist humidifiers are also very helpful...good luck!

Could be Asthma, but remember babies have very small noses and bronchial tubes. Babies drink milk which makes mucous and sometimes it causes that rasping..Try baby on side when sleeping. Also a sip or two of water after the bottle or the breast help eliminate some of the milk mucous.

hi hunni,
a raspy chest in a young baby is normally put down to some type of asthma, but if they start to cough up anything, take them back to the doctors. if this is your first child, most doctors tend to not take things seriously because your 'new' to this. (it doesnt mean thay are not good doctors though!) try a nice steamy room for a while to see if it helps her. if you feel the doctor isnt listening, persist. as her parent, you know her best. i hope this helps. tammy xxx

It sounds like asthma your doctor can prescribe you some medicine to give to him or her just tell him that the baby has not got any better and you have tried everything.

I was going to mention asthma then you did.
Have her see a specialist.
You can try removing stuffed toys from her room and covering her mattress with a plastic cover.
Still see the doctor.
Good luck.
