I've heard that some people raise Tilapia and other fish in aquaria that they harvest after a few years to eat. Does anyone know anything about what fish are appropriate and the volume of the tank necessary? What about conditions in the water? Is this safe?

Yes they can. it's not done really because to make money at it fish farmers need to raise many of them and to a large size and do all that quickly. Trout, bream, bass and tilapia can fairly easily be raised in aqariums, but you better have a large tank. I bred bream and tilapia (not at the same time) in a 135 gallon and it was a little crowded for the tilapia. Bass required a special 750 gallon tank. Not what you would call an aquarium really, it was a round plastic tank much like a kiddy wading pool not a glass box.

Well YES! But if you are talking about The aquarium in your living room, nahh! We are talking here of tanks from 500 gallons and above. Check some websites that talk about Hydrophonics, you will learn a lot. You will not only harvesting fishes but vegetables on the sideline.

Well, you'd certainly know what you were eating and where it came from! I would say it'd be safer and more healthy than farmed fish. Maybe you could try keeping something like trout in a pond, if that isn't too daft a suggestion? I wouldn't do it myself though, being vegetarian.

How could you raise a fish then eat it??? Maybe like Fiona4281, it's because I'm a veggie but I'd end up giving it a name then keeping it as a pet, like my goldfish, Ian, Graham & Angel etc. xxx
