it has fingerprints and dust on it and needs to be cleaned really bad..what is a safe way to clean it?

contrary to the previous anwsers, you should never put water or even a damp cloth on your laptop monitor. You can clean it with a lint free, soft, dry cloth. If that doesn't clean it adequately, then you must purchase the special cleanser recommended by the manufacturer of your laptop. Chemicals such as windex can seriously harm your monitor. Don't do it!

Simple:

Damp toilet paper
Wipe lightly in straight lines from top to bottom

You can also buy special cleaning solutions and sprays but simply a damp cloth will do.

You must not use alcohol though.

I also find that using cottom buds for the corners of screens works really well.

Hi stes2205,

The Macintosh sites that I've visited said to not use any chemicals at all. Just a damp cloth on the display. To protect it from the lint, grease, and dirt away, I put a piece of cloth over the keyboard when I close it up.
