It's about six months old. I noticed about a month ago that there was an odd musty smell throughout the first floor of the house that is permeating from the garbage disposal. The disposal does have a cap which I never really used, I just put it under the sink until it started smelling recently.
How can I correct and prevent this nasty odor? Thank you.

No, no dead mouse in the house - although I do have cats. Its' a funky smell but not that kind of funky.

One of the best cures for a smelly disposal is to run a few trays' worth of ice cubes through it. Be sure a little water is running, but not a lot, and put the ice through it a bit at a time, not all at once. This was recommended by the maker of my mother's first garbage disposal back in the 60s, and it still works on today's models!

Put a cup of bleach in a gallon of water and slowly pour into down the disposal while the disposal is running

I have run some broken up ice through (not cubes) with COLD running water. Then I take some cut up lemons and run them through. You can save your juice as you only need the rind. Works for me every time.
In between these times I put some dishwashing soap in the sink and run the disposal with hot water. Just don't do it to soon after the ice or vice-versa.

Grind up some orange peels in the disposal, do this about once a week until the smell goes away. Cound be you also may have a dead mouse somewhere .

put a few ice cubes in it and turn it on, 30 seconds or so, then pour a bout one cup of baking soda in it while running, that night put more baking soda but do not run it till am, flush for 1to 2 minutes with water and the unit on, there is food etc. in it, only other suggestion is to check the trap in the drain, make sure it has one

Put some baking SODA down it at night with a little water;
or make lemonade and grind the lemon skins down the disposal;
or put half a cup of vinegar down at night and rinse in am;
and, after using it, make sure you flush it with lots of water.
..hope this helps
