The game of basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first basketball goals were peach baskets nailed to the railings of the balcony in the gymnasium. There were 13 original rules - 12 of which are still in use today - though heavily modified.

The NBA actually started as the NATIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE, and it was not until the 1948 - '49 season that it became the NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION with 17 teams. There were NO professional black basketball players until 1950 when the Boston Celtics chose Chuck Cooper but the New York Knickerbockers signed Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton to the first professional contract. Earl Lloyd was the first black player to actually compete in a NBA game due to scheduling.

Basketball entered the Olympics as an official sport in 1936.

In professional basketball, a player can accumulate 6 personal fouls before being disqualified. In both college and high school, a player can accumulate only 5 personal fouls.

An OFFICIAL college men's basketball is 30 inches in circumference and weighs 25 ounces. An official women's collegiate basketball is 29 inches and weighs 20 ounces.
