surely they are educated enough to realise that america was also a penal colony for the british.
Also that not only were there convicts on the first fleet but also free settlers.
I have checked the history annuals and guess what my ancestor came as a free settler- him, his wife and 3 kids (this became about 12 after he got here- how cool is that)
anyway my rant answer the q though interested to here everyones thoughts...

Ha, if you're talking about Americans, I don't think the words 'surely they are educated enough' really apply... according to a geographic literacy survey done in the US, 1 in 5 Americans can't even locate the US on a blank world map! And they are the most powerful country in the world - oh goodie!

I have heard this before as well from overseas people, but I have also heard that Kangaroo's are jumping up the stairs at the Opera House. I mean I am sure some countries think we are still convicts.

I came from free settlers lol
& besides they weren't really criminals
they were just hungry & stole a bit of bread to feed themselves or their kids.
They are only the knockers who say that of Australians & are jealous of what we have haha

Do we all think that all Aussies are descendents of criminals? I don't think so many people do believe that. That doesn't even make sense to say so.
