Before the war, Japan had an Imperial and warlike government. They had an emperor, whom the people believed was divine. He ruled like a king, and had a very modern and capable military, as we found out at Pearl Harbor.
During the war, Japan invaded and took over much of the Pacific including Korea, Phillipines, Indo-China, parts of China and countless islands and even threatened Australia. Their main goal was to get the natural resources which Japan lacked, and still lack to this day.
After the war, Japan was de-militarized by treaty, and when the aftermath of devastation lifted, was able to focus on its rebuilding. Without having to focus on war machines, Japan couuld spend its money devoloping perhaps the best modern manufacturing techniques and methods in the world. Very efficient and quality oriented. A peace-dividend that paid off many times over.

What you need to do is actually read that info on Japan that Google brings up. I could have a ton of info on Japan before, during, and after WW II in 10 minutes, but I don't want to do your homework for you.
