I have been on a diet for the past 5 weeks and am not losing any weight. I just recently realised I may be pregnant. Can the first weeks of pregnancy affect weight loss?

it depends what you mean by diet. if you are just eating healthier etc, than dont worry about what you are doing. if you are on some radical diet where you can only drink soup all day, then STOP!

it may be that the first few weeks of pregnancy have stopped any weight loss. it could also be that your body is just taking a while to adjust to this new diet, or that the diet is not affecting you much at all.

i think the first thing you should do is go to the dr for a pregnancy test. if it comes back positive, discuss diet and stuff with your doc then.

You should not be losing weight (on purpose) if you are pregnant. They will usually recommend if you are overweight to only gain around 15 to 20 pounds. Even if you are not overweight you should gain no more than 35 pounds. However, it still varies and some people may gain more or less than those amounts. However, if you have lost weight before knowing you are pregnant then it will be okay. Make sure you start taking your prenatals and talk to your doctor. For me I lost weight without dieting. I guess my metabolism started speeding up. Pre pregnancy weight was 275 and pregnancy weight is 230. Of course I also had hypothyroidism and when my thyroid levels started leveling out it could have also helped me lose weight. Anyway, if you think you are pregnant, always talk to your doctor. And to have piece of mind take a pregnancy test. If you are not pregnant then you can still diet. I am 14 weeks and 2 days and not gained any weight or lost since my first trimester. Also, from weeks 10 to beginning of 12 I had morning sickness so could not put on any weight. I am starting to show a little and am loving it. But if you are pregnant and have lost weight it is okay. It would also depend how far along you are. Also, if by diet you mean lifestyle change that is different. Just remember your baby needs those nutrients such as some fish, iron containing foods, food containing folic acid and many other minerals you could be lacking if you diet. I would ask your doctor. A few good natural ways of changing your diet is to cut out sodas and juices and things containing high fructose corn syrup, eating more fruits and veggies as a snack instead of fast on the go snacks (anything like a chocolate bar, or chips, or snack cracker etc.) Excercise is good while pregnant or not pregnant. Just make sure you do not overdo it. Drink alot of water instead of gaitoraid or other things. Just changing a few things in your diet if you have them is healthy while you are pregnant or not pregnant. It is recommended to only eat about 300-500 calories more than your daily intake while pregnant.. Good luck.

14 weeks and 2 days pregnant.

My mom didnt know she was pregnant with me until her 4th month, she just thought she was gaining weight and worked out and dieted trying to keep her shape, finally she realized something wasnt right and when she found out she was pregnant she told the doctor how she had been dieting, there is nothing you can do about what you have or have not done so far, all you can do is start from today, take prenatal vitamins, eat healthy but do not restrict your calories, exercise is still ok but try to keep it low impact like walking, swimming etc., you definitely dont want to lose weight while you are pregnant but it is recommended to gain weight gradually to avoid stretch marks and gaining too much (average weight gain during pregnancy is 25-35 pounds)

No it does not affect the weight loss,a lot of women lose weight in the early weeks of pregnancy, its not healthy just in case u are pregnant to be on a diet *that is not good for the baby at all*..if u arent pregnant and your not losing weight its because your not doing something right,u need to cut out all sugars from your diet to lose weight, there are hidden sugars in the ingredients to products..sugar makes u gain weight.....stop the diet now and take the test,if it comes back positive u need to start eating normal again,if its negative go on with your diet...good luck!

Everybody hears "diet" and says " you should never diet when you are pregnant " which is not true. You just shouldn't cut down on your food intake, simply what you eat. Your diet may not be working if it is not coupled with a regular exersize routine. The two go hand in hand when you are trying to lose weight. I gained too much weight over the holidays and started eating healthy and doing cardio 5 times a week for 30 minutes each time and I lost 5 pounds in two weeks at 35 weeks pregnant, but everyone's body is different. Once I lost the excess 5 pounds I started slacking on the diet and exercise, and gained at an even faster rate than before! But to answer your question, yes, pregnancy can definietely affect weight loss, you build up amniotic fluid, your blood volume increases by 50%, your placenta will weight a couple of pounds, your boobs add weight, and shall I even mention the obvious, baby weight, most women lose 15 to 20 pounds within 1-2 weeks of giving birth for this reason. Hope all my rambling on helped!

I am a weight conscious person but while I was pregnant (especially during my twin pregnancy) I ate for the baby(ies). You should not try to lose weight when you are pregnant. There are many books and websites that can help you with a prenatal diet, as well as your doctor. If you continue to cut calories that can seriously impact the health of your child. You only have nine months to insure the health of your child, and you have the rest of your life to take the weight off. Don't make the wrong decision.

I would stop dieting, and see a doctor to confirm whether or not you are pregnant so you don't risk hurting the baby if you are having one. I gained weight with my 1st baby.in the first trimester. With my youngest, I lost weight, but I had strep throat. Everyone is different in that aspect, but if you are dieting, then it is likely you would not gain weight yet, but your body will try to save every good thing from your food to provide the baby and you with the best possible foundation for your pregnancy. Thus you would likely not gain weight either! Good luck and congrats if it is in order!!!

The diet must end NOW.......you can NOT diet while pregnant. Your baby eats what you eat. In order to lose weight while pregnant, you must use more energy that you eat....if you do this while pregnant, your baby gets nothing. Stop dieting and take a pregnancy test........

i was dieting as well when i found out that i had become pregnant unexpectedly.
i immediately STOPPED dieting.

you need to gain weight when pregnant, not lose it. losing weight while pregnant can cause GREAT distress to you and your unborn child.

i suggest taking a pregnancy test, or getting a blood test to confirm if you are pregnant or not.
not eating properly can also cause your period to stop, thus making you think your pregnant. so if you are eating VERY VERY little, or depriving yourself of food, you could be putting yourself at risk still.
