if i remember correctly there is a way to thread it so its easier to crochet

It shouldn't matter how you hold the hook. I've seen different methods. But it's all about whatever is most comfortable for you.

I usually wrap it once around my pinky and then it over my index finger to guide it, this gives me the best tension not to loose not tight and my hand doesn't get sore from clenching to keep tension, but seriously everyone just has to find what's right for them i knit and crochet pretty differently fro other people so maybe I'm not the best source.

I don't really think there is a correct way. It's what ever is comfortable for you. I hold my yarn, on my left hand, over the little finger, under the ring and middle finger, and over the ring finger.

I hold the yarn (this is FROM the skein/ball part) over my little finger, behind my ring finger, in front of my middle finger, and over my index finger to come out towards me. I hold the needle in my right hand, but more in my fist as opposed to holding it similar to a pencil. Used to drive my gramma crazy, she couldn't stand to watch me!
