I don't think we were taught the truth about much of anything. We are taught to believe whatever they want us to believe.

Because if children knew what really happened, they wouldn't celebrate, they'd be upset. Cultures need myths to preserve themselves, and self preservation is a drive at the cultural level as well as the individual level. History class has a lot of myths, this is only one of them.
