Fiat officially says this: Thank you for your inquiry about Fiat. Unfortunately, the company for the time being will not be operating in the U.S. market, instead focusing on key emerging markets such as Brazil and Argentina where growth potential is greatest. Fiat's new "centerpiece" model in this initiative is the Palio, otherwise known as the "World Car" because of the extreme flexibility of the vehicle's production process (different models can be produced off the same platform, with consistency across international markets).

Renault has made no statement.

The answer of course, they don't meet standards to be sold here.

The powers that be feel they won't sell enough of these small cars in the U.S. for a big enough profit to go through the hassle of making a presence in the U.S. But Renault controls Nissan and a Fiat comes here as a Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo.

I believe it is because they do not comform to American/Canadian Auto laws. That and they arn't that great of car, many problems. You have to have them Imported, I've seen a few in Calgary, and they always seem to be sitting out infront of repair shops, or on drive ways lifted off the ground.
