What's the point of it? Where did it come from? I asked my mom years ago and she said the Bible says that people cursed, but that doesn't really explain it. Who came up with it and why? Why is saying a bad word any worse than saying the "clean version" (butt, freaking, shoot, etc)? I don't cuss because it's wrong, I don't NEED to, and it would hurt my Christian testimony. But why is it wrong?

yeah it's not worshiping God, but neither is saying something like darn. and you can't just say nothing. so what do you say? "Oh no?" or "stupid _____" cause that's also not worshiping God. and i know the whole "Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring" thing, but WHY is it wrong, WHY is it a sin?

Before we check out what the Bible says, let’s crack open a Websters and look up some definitions of the word curse: "to swear at; use profane, blasphemous, or obscene language against; to bring evil or injury on; afflict." (Take note of two key words used here: against and afflict.)
Now let’s pop over to James 3:9-11 for some insight: "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?"
The fact is, D.K., words are far from harmless — especially the ones that curse, afflict and tear down. And it’s kinda obvious where they come from and why they’re off limits to Christians: SIN.
Consider this about all the words that casually fly out of our mouths:
• God wants us to have no part of sinful acts — which includes using bad language. He makes it clear that sin and holiness just don’t mix. "But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language from your lips" Colossians 3:8.
• Words — especially curse words — can be deadly. They can cut open a heart and destroy a person’s self-image. They can ignite a fire and drive someone to violence. The wrong kinds of words can cause incredible harm. That’s why James tells us to control our tongues. (See James 3:1-6.)
• Christians must use words for good, not evil. Through our words, we can promote healing. We can express God’s love and show that He cares. "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen" Ephesians

There are some curse words that have meanings that go back to medieval times, such as "f**k", which means fornication under the consent of the king...because during a period of history in England people where only to marry with the kings permission.
Others like, "MF", came about to describe men. They fornicated under the consent of the king so to speak with women. Women are/ or become mothers...
Other curse words lose me in translation...but I truly believe its the force and tone used when people say curse words that truly make them what they are. You curse people when you say things to them disrespectfully and don't care if those words come true on them or not.

It wouldn't matter because when you're mad enough to cuss at someone, it's more about the tone of your voice and the anger you are conveying. And besides, if you're mad enough to cuss at someone, what do you care what's "right or wrong".

these are power words, and if they are overused, they lose their power and you haven't got them when you really need intense language...however, the "clean version" can be just as bad, my sis used to say crap in such a way that I would cringe...

Out of habit..watch your thoughts, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become your habit. Watch your habits, they become your character.
