how does the size of europe and its countries affect how the people interact with each other across national borders

If it is just geographical, I do not think size of territory influences the way we interact with each other. It was in the past a sign of power and it influenced in some way the relation of those coming from a Great nation to those small and hence political dwarfs.

For me, the main determinants to personal interaction in Europe are languages, mind openness, education... and humour as we have to go behind clichés when we meet with each other.

There are now 27 countries in EU with very different backgrounds (from Denmark to Greece, or Portugal to Romania) and it is thus key not to consider the territory/economic/political size of the countries to maintain good relations with each other here.

europeans are so used to conversing with people in other languages and from other cultures. they travel around between countries very easily by train, car or plane and go to the other places for holidays.even though they have little rivalries, they are all very friendly with each other for the most part.

Size has nothing to do with it. It's more a case of language.
