Yes, I thought I had the perfect answer before you added "I can't quit". My husband found himself in that exact situation many moons ago and that's how he started a business of his own that grew and took off! Now he has 5. So you are really stuck there? That's the Bad News. And he takes the credit for your work? That's the Good News. See? Nothing to work with. You seem to have two choices IF there is a supervisor over your boss. #1. You can remain in this situation until you become complacent and stop trying or #2 Keep doing a good job knowing that someone over your boss will know what's going on (they usually do) and recognizes you. But you made it sound like you work for your father or your father-in-law and if that's the case, you are screwed. Never say Never. You have a right to be free too. Oh, and Hey, the guy will retire someday or die. That much I know.
Good Luck!! @8-)

If they treat you like the village idiot and probably pay you like the village idiot, then give them what they pay for! I recently got in a situation where I was up for a promotion. Got caught up in the fact that I seemed I was a shoe-in for the position. But management has a way of seeing on a higher plane, or at least thats what they try to convince you of. They brought in a guy that I guess they owed something to and made him boss, they gave him a secretary because he's basically a walking idiot, and promoted me because they couldn't avoid it and technically the place would have fallen apart. I got a deal to get all the certifications and accreditations I want, basically allowing me to write my own salary in about four years. Revenge will be sweet! In addition, remember that no general ever picks up a rifle, and what makes him is a great group of officers under him. Become irreplaceable and play the system throught his need for you. When the moment is right, let everyone know who the real brains is. This usually happens when you take a vacation and the place is lost without you.

Talk to his supervisor,Tell him Exactly what went down [don't whine] Have exact examples.Tell the supervisor you are tired of being milked for the answers by your boss while he gets the fat pay check.Keep your dignitey Thank him and leave. Many of these complaints and your supervisor will see for himself what your boss is doing.Be patient All good things come in time[one of these days you'll be out and your boss will look like the fool he is.]Deception does not have a long shelf life.He will show his true colors.

Shelty had a good idea, feed him misinformation. Load the situation with just a little bit of bad so as to not be obvious, and let him run with it. If it goes bad, and he comes back to blame him. simply tell him that as the boss, he should be the one giving correct answers, not you. You should be under his leadership and direction, not him under your leadership. I can understand your difficulty, I have been there myself. While you are doing this, I would work on a presentation for the EEOC, if you are in America, on the basis of hardship on you by your boss expecting you to do his job for him. You do have grounds to complain based on hardship. What he is doing is 2 fold. He is making life difficult for you, which is illegal, and the second point is that he is defending his job and being able to have a job, at your expense. While self preservation is something we all do, what he is doing is being a leech, and should be dealt with. I do recommend that you document everything, and issue a complaint against him based on his making your job a hardship for you.
In addition to all of this, begin making up a resume' and begin looking for work else where.
