Yes, but you need to get a grow light bulb. Click on the link below and it will show you what they look like. You can get them at a home supply store, like Home Depot, probably even Walmart (US).

Yes, technically they will, but if it is an incandescent lamp, the bulb itself will have to be within two centimeters of the leaves to benefit from it, this is a problem because plants have more than one leaf :) So, you can use a fluorescent tube, the average fluorescent tube still needs to be about an inch away to get somewhat of the light that is put off by the sun. Grow lamps are okay, they're not really what they are cracked up to be because you still need to be about 1-2 inches off the leaves, this is because so much UV is lost within that distance that beyond it you're getting nothing. You can get high intensity discharge (HID) grow lamps that are used for commercial purposes that will do a much better job but require a sometimes very expensive ballast and other equipment. Two main types of bulbs that are used is high pressure sodium or metal halide, I use a 1000 watt metal halid, with a mogul base that puts of 110000 lumens which at 6 feet IS the sun to a plant and will burn you badly, be careful. It also depends on what you're growing and the light needs of your plant, the bulb I use is used for things such as orchids. So to answer you're question, yes they can, but not well since you have to be in such close proximity to the light source, unless you're using a commercial application. Although a 1000 watt isnt needed for most applications, you can get 250-500 watt set ups that will work just fine at www.stealitback.com which is a police auction website that has a lot of confiscated lamps from put busts, so they must work ;)

Most plants need some natural light . The prayer plant likes to be under a lamp in the evening, but I think it likes the added warmth. There are grow bulbs that you can put into fixtures, and can even add a timer to give the plants 12 or 16 hours of good growing light.

cYes, a plant will grow under artificial light. Home Depot carry's them, your choice the screw in type or the flour scent fixture with the bulb. They carry both.

Most plants rely on light for photosynthesis. Most lamps don't provide enough light for the plant to be healthy.
