The Opera House was constructed because Sydney didn't have a large venue for theatrical and musical productions. There was a competition held to design the new building, and a Danish designer, Jorn Utzon won a competition to design it. However, during construction the Government of New South Wales and Utzon had several disagreements. The site is still used for theatrical and musical productions, with some of the biggest and best productions playing here. A Yahoo search for "Sydney Opera House" should bring up some more detailed information.

It was built for opera and other theatrical productions, and is still used for this purpose.
