Today i went up to a ATM in a local mall, punched in 60 bucks from my checking account. The thing spits out 4 20s - or 80 bucks. I was shocked. I counted it again. Sure enough. I think to myself real quick, well i must have hit 80 by mistake, the machine prints out my receipt and i look at it. It says withdrawel from checking $60. Will the bank catch this? Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Had it been a larger sum of money i would turn it in. But 20 bucks, im gonna just wait and see if they catch it. If they do, no big deal. They can deduct it from my account. I havent lost anything.
I am thinking that maybe...just maybe the last person to use the machine might have missed a 20 when they took their money out. But i dont know. The tray it spits the money out in is wide open and in plain view of anyone standing there or walking by. I dont see how someone could have missed it. Guess its my lucky day. Although i already spent it. Stopped and filled up the gas tank. That took 20 bucks. Haha.

The bank will come up $20 short, but there is no way to find out which customer it went to. And on stuff like that, they just write it off as error. In your case 2 bills probably just stuck together.

There have been cases where someone has filled up the $20 slot with 100 dollar bills instead so in your case you would have gotten $300 instead of $60. Banks don't usually let this type of mistake get out. They want you to believe their machines cant make mistakes.

Even if they do, what can they say? It's not like you can put the money back into the ATM. I think that if they do find out they'll probably just take it out of your account by the end of the month, you're not going to get into trouble it's only 20 bucks.

Don't worry about it. They probably will not be able to tell who got it. I would turn it in myself though. I've done such things in the past. ATMs, like all machines, do mess up. I've had them short me before. I just called them and they made it right. Even if they do call on you they can't do anything to you. Besides, they aren't going to make a fuss over 20 bucks they messed up on, and risk losing a customer.

well, this is your lucky day, its not your fault that the machine gave you more than 60 bucks. maybe when they filled up the machine, the other 20 got stuck w/the other bill thats why it became double.

Happened to me once. I was poor and broke and needed it, so it worked out. One bill had a slight dogear in the corner, must have pulled a second bill. Bank never figured it out.
