I read "The Devil Wears Prada" and it was a huge waste of time! THe writing was horrible.
For real chick lit, Margaret Atwood is definitely a good choice - the 'original and best,' if you will. Not sure if you're more looking for lighthearted and gossipy fun, or more serious stuff, but her stuff totally rocks. "The Edible Woman" is really good. She's sort of feminist but not in your face about it like some are.
Marian Keyes is pretty good (I read "Watermelon") which is similar to the genre/style you're talking about. Definitely funny and a quick read. I believe she's British whereas Atwood is Canadian.
Enjoy!

While some may not classify them as Chick Lit I suggest anything by Joyce Carol Oats, Margaret Atwood, or Dorthy Allison.
I highly recommend She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb and I second the Jennifer Weiner suggestion.

Jemima J -- A Novel about Ugly Ducklings and Swans
by Jane Green
Plus-sized Jemima Jones struggles with weight, dating, and work issues as she navigates a treacherous world dominated by thinner women, in the U.S.
"This book really is an uplifting read! I read it quickly because it was that engaging. Jemima is a character any woman can relate to. This book will put the reader is Jemima's as she faces heartache and happiness--hang on and enjoy!"

Weiner, Giffin, Keyes, and Kinsella are probably the best. I just tell people at the bookstore where I work to look for the pastel covers and they'll find a chick lit book.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is really good. Pretty much anything by Sarah Dessen or Meg Cabot is also good. Nicholas Sparks is good if you like romance. A Great and Terrible Beauty is fantasy/historical fiction.

Anything by Jennifer Weiner would be a good start. For more info, see www.jenniferweiner.com - Off the top of my head, her books are Good in Bed, Little Earthquakes, and In Her Shoes (just made into a movie not that long ago).
Once I start her books, I can't put them down!!!
