Granddaughters Hampster got loose (again) and Boss cat found it. When cat took it down stairs it's back appears broken but it does not appear to be in any pain. front feet work fine, eats, drinks and pulls itself along. It doesn't squeal or sqirm when being checked out, picked up, move back legs, or check the back. They think the cat severed the spinal cord-parapelgic hampters.. they want to rehab. it. suggested little wheels on a tiny chair..

If your serious, you need a vet's opinion as to whether or not it is in pain ASAP. The animal could be suffering and unable to display it's pain.

Let me ask you this, If you were dragging yourself around how would you feel?
I don't mean to be rude, but at the very least get the hamster some wheels on the tiny chair to be able to move around without to much of a struggle. Most animals tolerate pain a lot better than humans do. If the spinal cord is truly severed, he will have no pain because that is what tells the brain there is pain. But I think it would be nicer for the animal to put him to sleep. I realize that the kids will be heartbroken, but I feel it would be in the best insterest of the animal to do so.

Go to the vet immediately. They can determine if it has a broken spine or just some swelling causing the paralysis. As long as it's passing urine and defecating, it may be alright. I you notice it's not and the belly is becoming distended, I'd put it down. A distended may indicate a build up of urine in the bladder which is painful. In this case it would be suffering. I had a cat years ago with a spinal injury and she couldn't urinate or defecate and I had to express her bladder. My vet said she was suffering, so I put her down. She left 5- 3 week old babies behind. Your vet will know what's best in this situation.

Sorry, same answer as everyone else. Time to put the poor thing down. Don't let it suffer any longer than it HAS to. Be honest with your dad. This is one time when being a tattletale is a good thing. Your cousins need to take responsibility for their actions. If they are very little, all I can say is next time put the cage out of reach if at all possible. Best of luck with your dad, I know how scary this can be.

I've never heard of one surviving, but I guess you have a lucky hamster. I would get it an exercise ball to run around in, and also to protect it from the cat! Also, you really need to take it to the vet, just to check if it is in pain. Good luck!

If the spine was completely servered then the hamster wouldn't be able to move. Has it been to a Vet?

Personally, I would take it to the SPCA and have it humanely euthanized for about $5.
Animals instinctively show no pain so there is really no visual way to know if it is suffering. They have such a short life span naturally that it would be a crumby life hooked up to a home-made gadget.
