If you saw someone in a public place with scars all over their body (arms, legs, whatever skin was exposed)? Would you be shocked, disgusted, intrigued, full of pity? Would your opinion of them be affected by how they got those scars?
What if they'd had a very violent past, getting the scars from some kind of combat/abuse...

Or what if they'd done all of that to themselves?

Would the simple reality of their scars determine whether or not you spoke to them, or how you spoke to them? Do you think you'd be more driven by curiosity or fear?

Do you think it'd matter if they were male or female?

It would most likely pique my curiosity. The demeanor of that person would most likely dictate whether or not I would approach them. How they came by those scars would be none of my business. If they chose to tell me, then I would listen. Knowing a person's past is not nearly as important as what their future will be. My first point of concern would be their spiritual well being. I have known people whose past was vicious, and are not proud of it. Everything would depend on that person, and how open they might be.

I think that individuals are not being honest with themselves if they don't admit that it would give them a bit of pause to see a person with scars all over.

I know that I personally would be curious as to how the person ended up that way; however, I would also be wary of approaching the person. How they acquired the scars wouldn't matter to me, simply because the interaction would be too superficial and brief for that to matter.

There are some interesting articles on helping, where they manipulate the physical appearance of a person by having the person display a large birthmark on their face to see its impact on helping. I think that Piliavin Piliavin and Rodin did this study, if I remember correctly. You might be interested in checking it out.

i would talk to them just like i talk to everyone else. i mean yeah i kind of wonder what happened but i don't over think it. it doesn't matter if its a guy or a girl i'd talk to them normally. they're people too and since i didn't know why they had the scars i can't judge. i couldn't judge either way b/c no one except them truely understands the reasons behind it.

If you judge them based on their physical appearance you are uglier as a person inside than however ugly they may be on the outside.
