After a virus attack (which happens every 2 months or so as windows is so rubbish) I attempted to do the usual and re install windows but it just crashes the windows setup. I have tried to access the drive by connecting it as a slave and booting up with my backup drive, according to device manager the hard drive exists, but when i go to myComputer the drive is not there. PLEASE HELP ! !!!

Windows can't recognize the drive if either the master boot record or the partition table are corrupted. About the only thing you can do if the partition table has been corrupted is to do a low-level format on the drive and start from scratch.

Sounds like your drive is failing.
You can try to put the hard drive in the freezer for an hour or so and try rebooting it again. I know this sounds nuts but it has worked on some hard drives in the past.

There may be an issue with the hard drive itself.... let's eliminate that first.
Download & use this uitility :
hd-diag.zip
(having trouble pasting link ... just do a Yahoo search for it)
It is a boot diag & runs via DOS.

you fdisked the drive and did not put a partition table on it in short you need to format the drive

did you remember to set your backup drive as a master

buy a mac
or buy a usb or firewire caddy 4 it try it as an external hdd or
get a live linux cd and try acsessessing it from linux
