I actually did get to audition for them in Chicago, but the audition was never aired. I never had much experience or practice with singing, but I knew I wasn't one of those wretched singers oblivious to their own vocal defects. In the 10th grade, our choir teacher/play director casted me as Deborah Sue in "Bye Bye Birdie" and I had a solo song - I knew I couldn't be a bad singer if she trusted me to do that! So, I went in with no expectations and took a stab at it. It was nerve-wracking to go in front of them and have cameras at all angles on you, and my body was actually shaking while I did my audition.

I sang the first verse and chorus of "How Do I Live Without You." All three judges essentially said the same thing in different words: Simon told that I had an "okay" voice but he wasn't blown away, Paula said I had potential and to keep working at it, and Randy said I should come back again a different year. All in all, it wasn't horrible - I was glad they didn't cut me off after five seconds and tell me I had to be kidding myself to be there; they were kind and civil, and I took what they said as compliments - an "okay" voice is pretty nice from Cowell! I probably won't try out again since I'm moving along in my career path, and I wasn't serious about it to begin with. I met a lot of great people, had a blast doing it, and really enjoyed having the experience - I definitely recommend auditioning if it's something you're serious about and would like to do.

To answer your second question, music is subjective - everyone likes a different sound. Paula, Simon, and Randy are trained to pick contestants who will appeal to mainstream listeners because that's where all the money will be at. Someone wonderfully talented in folk or grunge could audition and be rejected because they don't fit the image of what American Idol is looking for. So, they can still be good, but good to a different crowd and good in a different sense. Also, you have to take into account a really good singer might choose a song that isn't fit for their voice. A contestant this year, Paula, sang Blondie's "Call Me" and all three judges were going to say "no" to her when Randy asked her to sing two seconds of "Hips Don't Lie." After they heard that, they were blown away and invited her to Hollywood - if Randy hadn't said that spur-of-the-moment, she wouldn't have made the cut - think of the others that has happened to.

Not making it to Hollywood means they're no good? That's hardly fair since 10,000 plus audition and only 15 to 30 actually go. The audition process is highly subjective based on the mood and opinion of the producers who hear the candidates before the judges. And, they're looking for the best of the best. There may be people who auditioned who had a bad day, had a cold or simply ARE good but aren't the best of the best.

Some who I have seen try out sound terrible and they have family and friends telling them that they sound great! How will they know they stink even if American Idol didn't take them? They get support from others lying to them!

No. I know I can't sing. I don't need Simon to tell me that I can't carry a tune. I know it.
