Each branch checks the other two, if you're talking about the US Federal government.

example:
If the Congress doesn't like something the President is doing they pass legislation to stop it...If the President doesn't like what the Congress is doing he can veto the bill.

The Executive Branch checks the Congress by having the power to veto any bills they pass. The Congress checks the Executive Branch (the President), by having the power to impeach him. The Judicial Branch (Supreme Court), can over-ride any legislation signed into law by the President by declaring that law unconstitutional. So, all three branches have some sort of power over the other, therefore, they all check each other.

The founding fathers started the Constitution, because they wanted to form a government that did not allow one person to have too much authority or control.
. I think what you are talking about is our checks and balances system. Limits imposed on all branches of government by giving each the right to amend acts of the other branches.

There are three branches; legislative, executive, and judicial. Under legislative control falls congress which the house of rep and the senate fall under as well.

The White house is the executive which the President and Vice President fall under that.

The supreme court is the judicial branch which controls the judges and attorney general.

A branch may use its powers to check the powers of the other two in order to maintain a balance of power among the three branches of government.

The executive branch has the power to veto bills passed by the legislative branch. The executive branch also has the power to appoint Supreme Court justices and thus check the Judicial branch. The legislative branch checks the executive branch by being able to override vetoes with a 2/3 majority vote of both houses. It checks the judicial branch by being able to approve supreme court justices. The legislative branch also checks both branches by having the power of impeachment. The judicial branch has the power of judicial review over both branches (the power to determine constitutionality of a law)

They each check each other; for example, when a bill is written, it is voted on by the legislature. If it doesn't pass, it dies, but if it passes, it is sent to the President to be signed, and if he signs it, it becomes law; if he vetos it, it is sent down and votes are taken to attempt to override the veto. If, after a bill becomes law, there is a question of its Constitutionality, that's where the third branch, the judiciary, comes into effect; the Supreme Court may find that the law is not Constitutional, in which case it is declared null and void, or they may find it IS Constitutional, in which case it is upheld.

It's nearly impossible to curtail the Executive Branch in times of war. All the "old" rules about checks and balances don't apply to "war" president.
