I suppose that's possible, but I think more often people help others and forget about themselves.

Could helping others also be a diversion to having to deal with your own needs. People can escape their own problems and needs through very creative and sometimes even pious ways.

Yes, of course it does.

A few examples:
Technically: In my last company I did some work in Excel for the company. It looked good and the sheets were spread out to the whole company. So a word made the round, that I am a kind of Excel guru (which I was not). So more and more support requests came to me, and since no one was able to solve them, I took care and helped out the people. I learned so much on Excel, just by helping others, that I became the Excel guru of the company and made extra money by providing Excel training within the company.

Emotionally: It gives you some satisfaction, if you can help others and they really can use that help. Just to know you did something good for them gives you some good mood and helps yourself to improof yourself.

Spiritually: I strongly belief that if you do something good, you will receive good back. My experience in life prooves it. It does not need to be the same person who does good things to you, it can be a different person. But it will come back and therefore help yourself.

Actually in a way it does. Helping people knows makes you know you did a good thing and makes you start to think of yourself since you get tired of it. Slowly you will be inspired by your hard work to think of ways to make yourself better.

Not necessarily.

It can inspire you to help yourself, but there are some people who put others needs above their own, and in some cases they neglect helping themselves.

It all depends on the person.

Yes. It makes you feel good and needed. That makes you feel better about yourself which in turn motivates you to help yourself.

I believe that helping yourself first is the beginning point to helping others. One needs to see themselves as being of value to themselves, and to others, before they can reach out to others to help them.
