the real importance of the bases is to store the genetic information. The sequence of A's , T's, G's, and C's is what the genetic information is.

Structurally, the bases are in the middle of the DNA double helix, and they hold the two strands together through hydrogen bonds. What's significant is that A can only bind with T, and G with C, because of hte position of their hydrogen bonds, and this allows for easy replication.

adenine only pairs with thymine, and guanine with cytosine. The bases make up the "rungs" of the dna ladder. The backbone is a sugar-phosphate chain.

Those four base are the building block of DNA. Without them, no DNA at all.
