Well first of all I'd say to make sure your mascara is not too old and that it is a decent brand – I'd also suggest you try mascara with the new style of wand, such as Rimmel Magnifeyes mascara as these brushes are a lot easier to use, I'd also suggest getting an eyebrow/eyelash comb that look like this - http://www.superdrug.com/invt/233714 - as these are designed specifically to comb out clumps.
Double check you are doing it right, that is not a patronising comment, you may simply not be applying it correctly or if you have been using mascara for a long time you may have gotten to used to applying it that you are not longer doing it correctly.
For your top lashes wiggle the mascara wand back and forth from the base of the lashed, and then roll the brush through your lashes with full strokes. Make sure to hold the wand vertically for the lower lashes, running it from side to side.
If you use more than one coat then let the first coat dry first, then make sure to comb the lashes between application of first and second stroke, don't exceed two coats as that would also make the lashes look clumpy.

Mascara's go clumpy when they dry up, so be as quick as you can, also the make of Mascara may not be a good one, i use "Great Lash" or "Exaggerate" with the comb, MAC mascara is great too! they don't dry too fast & they have long lasting effects, plus dont apply too much at one time, it will cause a build up on the brush a form clumps!! trust me, i paster my eyes, but i find applying a little then coming back to it works, also start from right at the start of yout lashes from the eye lid right to the tip evenly, you will notice they look longer and thicker. Use eyelash curlers for 30 seconds each eye before you apply Mascara, it gives an instant lift and you may find that you dont need as much Mascara!! Also, try to wipe your Mascara brush when you notice that it is getting a bit gunky, that way the brush will be fresh and prevent more clumps in the future! hope this helps!

It's the type of mascara you use. You need to use more expensive mascara to help and/or put it on thinner. I think Daring Curls by Avon is a very good mascara. You'd have to find an Avon representative if you dont' already have one, but it's worth it. It's only five or six dollars so it's not all the expensive. Hope I'm of help!

Probably your mascara is old, you might need to buy a new one. Or you probably keep on applying coat after coat without allowing the previous coat to dry first. Try either waiting in between applying coats for the mascara to dry or try buying a new mascara. =)

I have this exact same problem.
I also have a problem of getting it on my eyelids.
I've learned to take my left hand and pull up my eye lid below my eye brow and take the mascara and brush my eyelids from underneath.
It usually works for me..
Good luck.

well if it is old its going to clumb because its dried up so make sure that what your using is new.
Also if you keep reapplying mascara it will clumb because its not meant to be put on five times so make sure your not putting on too much.
If you still have problems look for special types or brands that say they wont clump
