It says dry clean only but the coat is a size too large and I'd like it to shrink. It was a present. It also has a lining if that makes any difference.

Even if you want it to shrink, washing wool when it says "dry-clean only" isn't a good idea because it will come out "looking washed". It will stay newer looking if you dry clean it. Once solution to get a nice look and have it shrink might be to try washing the coat on gentle, and then letting it drip dry. Then, take it to be dry cleaned for a polished finish.

Shrinking is the least of your problems if you put a wool coat in regular washer. All the wool will puff up, become fuzzy and pieces may completely detach from the coat itself. When it dries, either from the dryer or by air drying, it's going to become a matted mess. A nice idea to wash it in a regular washer, but just not practical.

If it says dry clean only, I wouldn't put it in a regular washer/dryer. Even if it did shrink, it may shrink way too much and the coat will be ruined.

Good luck.

I washed a coat in cold water and woolite on the gentle cycle.
After it spun out just spun it in the dryer with no heat.
Before it was dry I hung it on a wooden [large] hanger.
In the bathroom of course. It came out nice. Then use a steam iron and iron it if it has any wrinkles. Always iron the back or inside of the coat. Never the top, it looks shinney when you finish. if you do.
or you can get Dryel dryer activated cloth it is a home dryer dry cleaning kit. It did a lot of clothes and it did a good job.
You can dry clean clothes in your dryer.

I wouldn't put the coat in the washer to shrink it. You're probably better off getting sized. If you know of anyone that's a seamstress that would be your best to size it down. I would still dryclean it. You can use DRYEL in the dryer. There's a kit you can buy that includes a bag and the sheets which are packaged separately. It works great! I use it all the time.

well maybe if you hand wash it , but what will happen is the lining will shrink even smaller than the coat size . and if you put it in the machine then the dryer you will waste the coat completely. take it to the dry cleaner´s and ask them first no point in wasting a good coat

Only if you buy the product on the market that lets you do so. I think the product comes with a bag, and a sheet to put in the bag, along with your dry cleaning items. Then you put the bag in the dryer not the washer. I forget the name of the product but I'm sure a grocer should be able to help you find it.

No, dry clean it only as wool will shrink, but only parts of it may shrink and it can just ruin the coat completely.

The coat will be ruined and it probably will shrink but the lining will stay the same size. The lining will also be permanently wrinkled and you will end up throwing the coat away.

It will ruin the coat. Have it dry cleaned. It will definitely shrink if you wash it, but not in the way you want.
