I wouldn't recommend it, what happens if the tranny jumps into gear and the vehicle takes off. I know of two occasions in my area where this has happened. One vehicle was an older ford that jumped into reverse and didn't stop until it hit a semi trailer and the other was a newer Dodge that jumped into reverse and stopped when it plowed into my buddy's car and moved it about 2 feet

It can be. Some states and cities have laws against excessive idling of vehicles. In New York, drivers cannot let their engines idle for more than 3 minutes unless it is being used to operate other equipment. Enforcement is not very intense, but it is illegal. Even if it is legal in your area, it is wasteful of fuel and bad for the air quality. Your car actually warms up faster if you drive it until it warms up. Modern fuel injection systems compensate for the cold engine temperature, so just drive a little slower and accelerate gently until it warms up.

Yes, it is illegal. But, in your driveway will not get you into trouble criminally. Leaving it running at the gas station may get you cited. Both will not get you paid by the insurance company if it is stolen. That is why there are many new models that will allow you to start the car from in your house, so it can warm up. The car cannot be moved until the key is placed in the ignition.

Forget about whether it's illegal or not (which it is in some places). It's just a silly idea to warm your car up by idling it. Start the car, when the oil pressure builds to normal (about ten seconds), put in in gear and drive away gently. It will warm up faster while driving than standing still, and you won't be wasting fuel.

Varies by state and city. In some places it's illegal but unenforced. (Fairbanks, Alaska, for example, where every single driver in the city would be ticketed all the damn time, including the police.)

Not sure if it's illegal but you might want to check with your insurance company, most will not cover a stolen vehicle that is left running.
