it will depend on the size of the waste pipe. 3" or 4" an 1/8th inch would be acceptable, anything smaller should be 1/4. To much pitch the water flows to fast and will leave solids behind, to little pitch and the solids won't move enough and accumulate. I don't have my code book handy here, but I have done this once or twice. ;)
Basically the larger the pipe is, the less pitch you can get away with.

The master plumber is right. On 3 and 4 inch pipe 1/8" (bare minimum) to 1/4" per foot of fall and on 2" and1 1/2" pipe you want 1/4" per foot of fall. Straight from the code book!

The desired fall is 1/4" per foot. Usually code will accept 1/8" in tight circumstances.
1/4" provides the flow conditions that do the best job of moving waste along the pipe. Less than 1/8" can create conditions that encourage clogging.
