I had this trouble about a month ago at work when our tech was working on our computers and he accidentally exited me out of the word document I was in. He went back and looked to see if he could retreive it but he said I could not..and this is why..there is a lock on your computer to keep the last spreadsheet you were working but I did not have mine locked. He locked it for me and I have not had this problem since. You should check into your computer settings for word and see if you have it locked.

Possibly if something goes mega weired the nice auto recovery on word may bring it back, but that only tends to work when you dont want it to

If that's the only version of the file, the answer is No, you can't retrieve it.
