A police detective investigates and detects crime. Crime Scene Investigators do not go to work until a crime has been detected. They use scientific and other tools to investigate things like causes of death. They may take pictures of the crime scene in order to preserve the way things originally were since at times something important may be overlooked at first. They also gather DNA and other evidence. The police detectives and CSIs work closely to solve crimes.

CSI technically is included in 'detective'.

However, detectives, like spies, like teachers, can have NO LEGAL LICENSE OR AUTHORITY. Detectives in the formal sense are employed by Law enforcement to investigate just about anything, usually by asking questions and talking to people.

CSI are lab technicians and scientists, they look at evidence, analyze them and are always pressed for time.

Crime Scene Investigators only focus on the crime scene and situation itself. Detectives take it from there. Detectives also investigate whebn there IS NO crime scene.
