True freedom is knowing the truth of life, and yes it is free, the cost is dropping ones beliefs that are false anyway. Remember what the Buddha said about "attaining" enlightenment?

Freedom is just a state of mind or at most an idea. There is no way we'd ever be "FREE", we need government and laws. Laws are the Nemesis to freedom, but without them we'd live in fear. We have accept most of the laws we have as just and are content with our level of freedom. Not all laws are just most are still a work in progress, we elect (for the most part) people to decide which laws would best govern us and allow us to believe we are free. That's the price we pay for our freedoms of today... we will pay for them tragically more in the near future.

What is it to be really free by your idea? Really free to do what ever you want regardless of cost or consequences? That kind of freedom doesn't exist for anyone, but growing up in a place where it is felt that people have the right to choose and think and speak for themselves, to live their lives by their own choices, so long as they are not trying to harm or interfere with others or at least interfere with others as little as possible is a freedom that some have not known.

Is there a price for this? Look at history, there was a man who felt he knew what was right and what was wrong, he lead his people to war, many of his people died, following his orders, because he had the power to command with out being questioned, he had the authority to order the deaths of millions simply because he didn't like "their kind".

If the people of his country could have spoken out against him, and his choices then perhaps less would have died.

That was Hitler.

Currently a man has made the choice to take his people to war, to see the men and women of his country die for his beliefs. Some question him, is he right or wrong?

Well here in the USA we have the right to question those decisions about the men and women being sent over seas, we keep those who seize or are elected to power in this country in some kind of check, by the freedoms we have.

Do we pay that? Yes and our ancestors paid for it, when they fought men like Hitler, when they fought for the rights to have a voice in the decision making process of the goverment during the Revolutionary war, and while it would be nice to not have to stand up for yourself, your people, and your freedoms, there may be times when we do need to protect ourselves from those who would take it away.

But then again you have the freedom to choose to not pay any price for freedom, and accept what ever may come.
And even the freedom to say some prices are just to high to pay.

example I do not want my loved ones and children exposed to certain ideals and beliefs but if I silence the voices of those I don't agree with then someday someone may try to silence my voice, my opinion. So I accept that others should have the same freedoms as I and part of the price I pay may be I see symbols of hate, words of hate, which I have the freedom to speak out against, just not to silence.

Freedom is anything but free. Freedom is purchased by blood and battle and maintained through conflict, peace and turmoil by those who willingly give themselves to preserve it.

why does everyone ask that? just because the word "free" is in freedom, why is freedom supposed to be free? the freedom isn't free, it's just what makes us free.
