Hi, I have trouble getting by with less than 9 hours of sleep. My ideal time seems to be going to bed between 11:30 and midnight and getting up at 9am (still, I could probably sleep until 10am if I don't have to get up). Because of this, I have had trouble making it on time at many jobs. If I get less than 9 hours of sleep on more than a few days in a row, my body starts to ache and I get sick (like catch a cold). Even if it's just one day, I cannot fuction well with less than 9 hours (sleepy, tired, brain feeling cloudy). I think I have enough exercise, since I bike to my work and errands every day -- but my sleep pattern was the same even when I had a car. Even if I can go to bed and get up early to go to work on time (which I have tried but falling asleep earlier is difficult), I don't want to spend 9 hours of my day sleeping! I want to be able to make it with 6 to 8 hours, as with many of my productive friends! Any ideas?

...thank you for some of the answers!...but if I have to live with my sleep pattern, it means I cannot take jobs that start earlier than 10am...or it has to allow flex time...

Have you had your thyroid checked? I have a thyroid problem, and it causes me to be EXTREMELY tired when I am not on the meds. I know many people who have slept 10 hours, and it came down to a thyroid problem. If your thyroid is acting up, you may be snoring, and when you snore, you actually can have episodes of apnea (I have done this), which will actually cause you to wake up without knowing you have done so SEVERAL times a night.

Dude, go get your thyroid checked...or go see a physician to see if there is some other medical condition that makes you so tired that you have to sleep nine or ten hours...that's just too much.

Obviously you need to go to bed earlier and get up earlier. Most of us would LOVE to stay up late and find a job that starts after 10am, but in the real world most folks work 9 to 5.

If you set an alarm clock and get up the same time every day no matter what time you go to bed at night, you'll soon be able to get to bed earlier and wake up earlier.

The body needs at least 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep to allow the REM cycle to happen. If you don't get this, your Adrenal Gland will not get recharged. This will make you sleepy the next day. Caffeine will have a negative affect on your Adrenal glands and if you drink a lot of coffee, you will find you will need more sleep to allow the Adrenal gland to recharge fully. So, when you feel sleepy, you drink the coffee or caffeine drinks and you are in a vicious cycle.

If you are not getting enough oxygen at night, you will not allow your body to regenerate and you will need more sleep. Try using breathe right strips for a few nights because this will open up the nasal passages and allow more oxygen in.

If you are having sleep apnea where you stop breathing, you will not be getting a complete sleep cycle and require a lot more sleep. You can get a sleep test to see if this is happening.

Good luck.

Well, I don't know if this is the best way to approach things or not, but if you feel tired during the day, try drinking coffee or some drink that has caffeine in it in the morning. Hopefully, that will wake you up. As for the sickness, this could be some sort of illness. You might want to talk to a doctor about that and see what he recommends. In fact, that would be my first course of action. Your doctor can give you a way better answer than the Average Joe on Yahoo! Answers. Good luck, and I hope you found this helpful.

First of all stop comparing yourself to your "productive" friends. You are you, with your own unique talents and gifts, and sleep patterns don't make you any less of a person.

Second, have you talked to your doctor about this? I'm not an M.D. (and I don't play one on T.V.), but it seems like you need a THOROUGH physical checkup. Write down all your symptoms and questions you might have and take that with you to your appointment along with a list of any medications you are taking. Don't forget to mention any stress you are going through and any other factors that could affect your health (including your diet).

I hope this will be helpful to you, and I wish you the best of luck as you look for answers. Take care!

You have probably trained your body to want that much sleep. You have to retrain it to accept a little less. Go to bed at 10:30 pm and wake up earlier. Sleep an hour extra on your free days. You have to get used to it, and you will in time- if you have the patience to carry it through.

It may be what time you actually go to sleep that is the problem. You may need to go to sleep at 9 or 10pm (earlier bedtime) and sleep for 8 hours or so to actually feel refreshed.
Try going to bed for 9 pm or 10pm for a week and see what time you can get up.
