Take the fish and the filter back to the store. Give them back the fish and get your money back. Tell the morons who sold all this to you they don't know anything about fish. Get them to put your filter together, go home cycle your tank and find a new store to buy your fish. Petsmart doesn't know diddly about the fish they sell. Find someone reputable.

Petsmart should have told you about the cycling process of your tank before they sold it to you.

I have two fish tanks....a 75 gallon and 55 gallon. It depends on the kind of filter. If it is a power filter. The plug in kind, with the tube that goes down into the water and the remained of the filter is on the outside of the tank...? With that, you need to fit the end with the kind of grating...on the bottom of the tube. Put the propeller end on the curved end of the tube. After you get the cartridges rinsed in cold water, put them into the filter. Pour enough water into the top to the rim. Plug the filter in. If it does not start up....put the propeller end.. the end that helps suck up the water snugly down into the center hole area at the top. Wiggle it around a little bit. Sometimes with these filters, if the propeller isn't properly put onto the end, it will not create the suction for the water to come up the tube. You main problem is going to be getting the propeller end on correctly. It should slide on the curved end and snap into place. It is kinda hard to explain and depending on what brand of filter you are putting together may vary slightly. I would keep trying. If you are having a really hard time, take the thing back to Petsmart and have them assemle it there. Then just bring it back home, fill it up with water before you plug it in. Plug it in and it should start sucking the water up the tube into the filter. Make sure you have enough water into the tank....atleast an inch from the top. If there isn't enough water in the tank when you start the filter, it will not perform correctly. Sorry I can't be of more help. What I would do is take the thing back and have them assemle it. Those people there can be pretty stupid sometimes when it comes to helping beginners with items. They seem to think everyone is an expert. Good luck. In the meantime, relax. The fish will be okay without the filter for a few hours until you can figure it out. : )

It's really kind of impossible to give written directions for something we can't see. Especially when we don't even know what kind of filter it is. Didn't it come with directions? Probably the easiest thing would be to go back to PetSmart with the filter, find the guy who told you it would be easy, if he's not there, at least get someone to help you, tell him it's not so easy and ask them to please show you how to assemble it. Do it right there in the store and carry it out as assembled as you can. Sorry we can't help more. Good luck!

Edit: Bzzflygirl is right about the fish. You really shouldn't introduce fish until you get the water cycled. At the very least, if you won't/can't return the fish, only use spring water, add some Stress-Coat and some Bio-Spira, get some tablets to get the proper ph set up so that you get the water in a somewhat properly cycled state.

While you're figuring out the filter, put the fish in a bucket or something with some tepid water and Aqua Safe. You'll want to filter the water in your new tank for a day before you put the fish in (and if you're putting a new filter in an established tank, take those fish out and filter for a day.)

What kind is it? One common problem is not wetting the filter material (the stuff that filters, not the motor that runs the water through) before using the filter. Dip it in water and then put it in the tank--sometimes I forget, and it doesn't work. Just disassemble it and wet it and put it back in.

Also, if it has charcoal, make sure you rinse it thoroughly before you put it in the water--they have charcoal dust, which is black and ug-lay.

Try those things, and if it doesn't work, call somebody, or ask a pet store person.

Bring the fish back and bring the filter. Return the fish and ask them for help with assembly.

Buy a test kit for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. Then look for an article on fishless cycling. It takes at least a week and up to 4.

I said to bring the fish back, because they often die during cycling. After the tank is cycled you can buy new fish. That way you won't lose any fish or any money buying new ones.
