One whole size is a lot to get them to shrink and still fit correctly. One of my favorite pairs of jeans are also too big and although I managed to get them to shrink a little, they are still lose enough that they don't fit right.
On the plus side, if they are cheaper quality jeans, you have a better chance of them shrinking to fit.
The trick is HEAT. Wash them on HOT, use hot wash and hot rinse if your machine has that option. (I know a lot of the older models don't) If it doesn't, if you are able to, (a lot of the newer machines lock once started) wash them on hot and take them out before rinse cycle, which is generally cold unless you have the HOT/HOT option.
Dry them on HIGH. Once they are dry try them on, see if they managed to shrink at all and try it again. Be sure to use detergent that won't fade out the color too.
Next time remember to try them on in the store or don't take the tags off at home until you have tried them on. :) Good luck to you!

You'll be happier if you just take them back and get ones that fit. A lot of jeans today don't shrink in the laundry as much as they used to.

I hate that problem, now I shop very specifically even if it cost me a little more money. For now, try washing them in hot water and then drying them on hot/extra hot. This may make them fit awkwardly- ie they may shrink the length but not the width, depends...

yea purchase it 2 sizes better. Like say in case your like 28 purchase a 30 or 32 because typically the waist and legs shrink and they experience like too dermis tight. in the experience that they experience enormous once you position on them before each and every thing dont worry theyll shrink.

Wash them in the hottest setting in your washing machine. Then dry them on the hottest setting for a long time. This should shrink them substantially if they are cotton, which Im assuming they are.

Not all jeans can be shrunk. If you still have the reciept take them back. If not, one possible way is too wash them a lot (twice). Try that. Sorry, i dont have a lot of suggestions.

Even if you can get them to draw up to a smaller size, they will stretch back out and be too large again. Better to take them back and get the right size.

just wash them regularly and then put them in the dryer on high, after you do this a couple of times, they will shrink.
