I love series', sometimes you just need to find out what happened next.
I love love love Patricia Cornwell, Scarpetta series.
Neale Patrick Walsh, Conversations with God series
Richard Bach is kind of a series?
Marion Zimmer Bradley, Avalon series
Douglas Adams, Hitchhiker series
CS Lewis, Narnia series, he also did some sci-fi I can't remember.
There is of course, Lord of the Rings...and Hobbit...and all the Middle Earth stuff, Silmarillion, etc. They are all separate entities but they are about the same world (Middle Earth) just different facets of that.
Eragon series.
Thomas Harris...Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising.
Do you like humorists? Check out Robert Fulghum, and Patrick McManus, Bailey White.
I think Agatha Christie did some books about a central character.
Dee Henderson is a Christian author with several series, she does suspense with a strong emphasis on faith in crisis. The O'Malley series is one of hers, I read most of them.
VC Andrews had several series. Twisty and weird and very readable.
Barbara Kingsolver had two books that went together...Bean Trees and Pigs in Heaven.
Many of these are written by women...and as a woman I love them, I don't know if it is as palatable for men but it is good writing.

The Chanters of Tremaris Trilogy (The Singer of All Songs, The Waterless Sea, The Tenth Power) was AMAZING. Seriously, INSTANT favorite books, and I HAVE read Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, and East of Eden.
Also, like someone said before, His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass) is really good.

The Otherland Series by Tad Williams is one of the most amazing I've ever read. It has 4 books and they are 800 - 1000 pages each.
The Maximum Ride Series by James Patterson is also really great. There are two books out so far.
Happy Reading!

Of course I recommend the Harry Potter series, its beyond amazing and I have read them over and over since 2001. Nothing beats those books, god bless J.K. Rowling.
Also I recommend the 'Chrestomanci' Series by Diana Wynne Jones.
make sure you read 'Charmed Life' first, followed by 'The Lives of Christopher Chant'. Then 'Witch Week', 'The Magicians of Caprona' and 'the short stories' can be read in any order after that.
And I recommend the 'Series of Unfortunate Events' series by Lemony Snicket.
