The smoky look is done with shades of grey or charcoal or in blues or berries/purple and violet shades. You can keep your black eye liner and black mascara. For the evening you can darken with deeper blues, black (but not if you have a light skin tone) and grays, coupled with false eyelashes for added drama. Now to get the look follow these steps:
Step 1. Line top and bottom lashes with cranberry, green or black depending on your eye color.
Step 2. Smudge and blend the line so the color smoothly transitions from the lashes.
Step 3. Layer an eye shadow of a contrasting or coordinating shade on top of the liner, blending up and out at the outer corner of the eye. (This part is tricky and if not done right will result in that dirty smudged look you hate). I suggest you look for a liner brush or a Q-tip to help you.
Step 4. Add a second layer of eye shadow in a lighter shade at the crease of the eye and blend up toward the eyebrow. Trend upward with the color and at an angle at the outer corner of your eye, like "Cat eyes" without as much drama.
Step 5. Add your Mascara for the final touch.

Instead of using a black shadow or liner, try doing this look with a charcoal grey or chocolate brown. I have found that the matte shades of Cover Girl, namely Midnight Jazz and Hazelnut are awesome for getting this look, if you are blonde, try a lighter brown, not too light but a medium should do nicely...
Use a thin makeup brush and line from the middle of the bottom and top lid out to the end, graduating the stroke from thinner in the middle to slightly wider towards the corner of the eye, blend well...
do not use a fake lash but use some nice lengthening mascara in a complementary colour...and it should give you a great look that doesn't look over the top...

Draw a line around the eyes with black pencil liner, just a thin line will do, then use a thin sponge (some eyeliners come with one attatched) to smudge the eyeliner.
Or
Buy a trio eyeshadow, of dark grey, medium grey and white. Use a small amount of the dark one closest to the eye, then work up to white at the top, then blend together. Use the least amount of the darkest, slightly more of the medium grey, and then more of the white

Start off with lightening up your black/charcoal eyeshadow with some white eyeshadow and spreading it on your eye lid. Then, with a separate [small] brush, dip your brush in some water, and dab in charcoal eyeshadow. Take the brush and line the inside of your eyelid towards the outter lashes. Then, take the brush and lightly brush your eyeshadow on the underside of your eye, but only do it half-way.
Then just apply your mascara and dab some white eyeshadow on the inside of your eyes to make your eyes look bigger.
It looks very nice, very high fashion when done well.

Don't use eye liner, not even kohl pencils. Use a mid grey powder shadow and a thin applicator. Once you've underscored your eyes gently smudge it with your finger. Do the same on the top lid right near the lashes, using the same colour AFTER you have applied your eye shadow. (Remember, THIN applicator and keep right near the lashes.
Hope that helps.

Get yourself an angled brush and use some eye shadow instead on eyeliner - less harsh and v effective. Have linked to the MAC brush I mean!
