I have no idea, is 4.0 = 100% and 3.0 = 75%? or is it something totally different.

In my country the max you can get is 20, and 10 is the passing mark. My undergraduate average was exactly 17. Is that a 3.4 GPA?

Yes, a 17 in your country's system converts to a 3.4 in the US 4-point GPA system.

Figure it this way. All grades can be converted to a 100 point scale. 17 out of 20 converts to 85 out of 100. (Multiply 17 by 5.) Then, 85 out of 100 converts to 3.4 on a 4 point scale. (Multiply 85 by .04)

That's the way it works.

The first answer is correct as far as it goes but most U.S. universities also give plus and minus grades. There is no set percentage for a student to be given a certain grade - that is determined by each teacher.

4.0 = A
3.7 = A-
3.3 = B+
3.0 = B
2.7 = B-
2.3 = C+
2.0 = C
1.7 = C-
1.3 = C+
1.0 = D
0.7 = D-
0.0 = F

The numbers are multiplied by the number of credits for a course. For instance, if you received an A- in a 3 hour course and a B in a 4 hour course, your GPA would be figured this way:

3 x 3.7 = 11.1
4 x 3.0 = 12
11.1 + 12 = 23.1
23.1 (the total number of points) divided by 7 (the total number of hours) = 3.30 grade point average (GPA)

Probably not. GPA stands for grade point averages. Usually in the US students receive letter grades, not numbers, A, B, C, D, F.
A is worth 4 points, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1 and F is 0. You multiply this number of points by the number of units for each course, then add up all the grade points, then divide by the number of units to get the GPA.
